Japan Votes On Its Top 100 Games

Age-old Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has published the results of a poll of Famitsu readers' top 100 games. There's no quicker way to see the vast differences between Japanese and American tastes. It's also very easy to see why so many gaming nerds idolize Japan, as the traditionally dorkier genres (and I mean that in the nicest way, I swear) are overwhelmingly represented.

Amazing, innit? Not only in the sheer number of RPGs, but in how they're ordered; Final Fantasy VIII and IX over VI and Chrono Trigger? Bizarre. X over VII is rather surprising to me too. I love RPGs as much as the next guy -- all right, more than the next guy -- but this really goes too far. Mario 64 isn't on the list, but Final Fight is?

Next Generation also notes that only four games on the list come from outside Asia, and only one of those was actually created outside of Japan. "The Wizardry, Sim City and Tetris Japanese versions were all created locally while Grand Theft Auto can claim to be fully non-Japanese."

Next time you read a story about the Japanese game market and wonder why they do this, or act this way, just remember: We really are that different.

Street Fighter II being the first non-RPG game down at 20th? Yikes.

Please note that the listed "Fire Emblem (1994)" has a subtitle called "Monshou no Nazo" or "Mystery of the Emblem" translated into English.

yes I am a fire emblem whore
