Lara Croft Enters Guiness World Records

How convenient that this occurs at the same time Tomb Raider: Legend comes out. I wonder how much an entry in the Guiness World Records costs?

Lara Croft has entered the Guiness book as "most successful human video game heroine," a title she won out over competiton from the likes of Chun Li, Jill Valentine, and... Daphne from Dragon's Lair? What the hell? Were they that hard up to find female stars in games?

Eidos' Ian Livingstone had this to say about the occassion: "It is a mark of the phenomenal success of the Tomb Raider series that 10 years after the first game release, Lara Croft is more popular now than ever."

No she's not. The developers have all but admitted that fact. She's become like the sex symbol version of Doom -- The go-to figure whenever someone in the media (usually the mainstream press) needs to represent a certain aspect of video games, even long after the figure itself has lost all relevance. Speaking of losing relevance, does anyone pay attention to Guiness World Records anymore? Maybe I'm just getting old.

Hahaha. Its sort of like when Congress talks about how inappropriate television is, they always use Beavis & Butthead as their frame of reference.

But...what about Samus Aran? :-(

I don't have any hard numbers, but I'd be willing to bet Tomb Raider and its sequels have sold better than the Metroid series.
