Newspost for 12-07-06

Industry and multi-console news:

  • Gamespot has a new feature up directly comparing 360 and PS3 screenshots.
  • I submit this image without any further explanation. That guy is just so annoyed.
  • Your life is cold and meaningless until the day you own a headcrab hat.
  • Hilary Clinton and Joe Lieberman are suddenly buddy-buddy with the ESRB.
  • Far Cry and Crysis developer Crytek says they may be forced to leave Germany if the recently drafted bill criminalizing the development of violent video games passes.
  • A Washington state representative says retailers in her state are still selling violent video games to children over half the time in secret shopper tests. One retail clerk went as far as to say "Just don't tell anyone. I know your mom will just buy it for you anyway."
  • GoGamer is having a sale on certain titles, such as Neverwinter Nights 2 for $29.90. Best one: LA Rush on the Xbox for $2.90. They probably still won't sell them.
  • AP Wire: Prototype Glove Controls Video Games. Now why does that sound familiar...
  • An independent survey finds that "positive discussions" about HD-DVD were 46% higher than positive discussions about Blu-ray. I don't know how meaningful Internet forum discussions are for tracking consumer interest.

PC news:

Nintendo news:

  • Bob Ross Inc. has reaffirmed its commitment to a Bob Ross game, saying "by hook or by crook there will be a game." So what happened to those other guys? "I think they were sort of overwhelmed and they don't have the resources and the energy to tend to the huge demand that is needed."
  • DarwiinRemote is a small app that allows you to use the Wii remote with your Mac. It doesn't do much right now, but hey, it's only v0.1a.
  • Or if cursors aren't your bag, you can use your remote to play air drums.
  • Nintendo is investigating Wii strap breakages. Miyamoto: "We are looking into the situation to see if there are additional methods to encourage people to kind of calm down so they would never throw away the controller itself."
  • European retailers say people without pre-orders are unlikely to get a Wii until next year.
  • Amazon has cut down Children of Mana and Magical Starsign to $14.99 each.
  • Even more scans and details on Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings.
  • It was a pre-order bonus, so I guess you're out of luck now, but here's a video walkthrough of all the crap that came along with a pre-order of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
  • Some are reporting that retailers in Spain have broken the Wii street date.
  • For the artists: A thrown remote and a broken screen, rendered in Etch-a-Sketch.
  • This is far from a scientific survey, but a poll at NeoGAF shows, of 716 respondants, Bonk coming out on top as the VC title purchased by the most people. Most likely because everyone has played the Nintendo and Sega games a thousand times whereas the TurboGrafx stuff is comparitively "new." Being $6 doesn't hurt either.
  • A blogger at WiiNintendo is going to play WiiSports 30 minutes a day, every day, and chart how much of a benefit the exercise gives him over the course of six weeks.

Sony news:

Microsoft news:

  • Shadowrun will feature a party based online system similar to Halo 2.
  • The X06 trailer for Mass Effect -- yes, the X06 that was three months ago -- will finally be seen by the general public this Friday on Bioware's website and the Xbox Live Marketplace.
  • If you're willing to void your warantee, this 360 mod will quiet your system by about 4 or 5 dB.
  • A Rainbow Six patch is coming soon. Remember the days when we worried that broken games might be released and patched later, like on the PC? Ah, simpler times.

PAL countries don't get TurboGrafx stuff :(

How come, webber? Was the system as a whole never released to PAL countries?

I thought only Australia didn't get TG games, since the console was never released there..

some licensing issues combined with nintendo of europe/australia having no resources and generally being cunty i think.
also, we get the useless pal versions of everything that are letterboxed and run at only 80% speed, and they cost us far far more. oh yeah, and we will never get games that were not originally released over here, so no mario rpg or chrono trigger. hooray!

this article and its comments give a pretty good summary as to why nintendo sux

this is a pretty good comment from that link that pretty much sums it up:

And then Nintendo wonder why they sell so poorly in some parts of Europe... In the UK, you'd have thought being pounded into the sand by Sega might have been the first clue that shafting a region with HIGH PRICES AND LIMITED RELEASES is not the ideal way to build a loyal customer base. Alas, they still haven't learned. It's nearly as expensive as a base model 360, the VC titles cost more, and the list of games we'll get is the very list that caused them to fail so miserably before, AND they still have borders.

ps there still isnt a marketing presence by nintendo in australia :(
