Industry and multi-console news:
- DVD Empire has announced they will no longer be selling games, saying that smaller retailers simply can't make any money in the game market. "The game companies make their profit selling to us. We make no profit selling to you."
- Will Wright will be speaking at DICE in February and delivering a keynote at the ScreenBurn festival in March.
- The Tokyo Game Show has been extended to four days.
- A Sony rep has called the Wii an "impulse buy", saying it doesn't belong in the same category as the PS3. I guess he meant that to be a bad thing.
- Firing Squad has a short interview with lead designer Mark Nelson about the Oblivion expansion Shivering Isles.
- Konami has released the results of their DDR health study.
- Monster Madness has been dated for the 360 and PC April 3.
- 1up has a feature on people who overcome their disabilities in order to play games.
- Shadow of the Colossus, of all games, can be seen in the trailer for the new Adam Sandler / Don Cheadle drama Reign Over Me. Even more shocking, Sandler can be heard saying "Stab the wing", which is... an accurate description of the game they're playing! And even the level! Impossible!
- In Japan, Tecmo and Mastercard are offering Dead or Alive credit cards.
- Dell has admitted they're thinking about making a gaming handheld.
- This San Andreas stunt video is impressive, if a little pointless.
- A demo has been released for Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, a homebrew RPG of clearly epic proportions. There's also a trailer.
- This trailer for the cutting edge game Cube isn't real, but it should be.
PC news:
- Gamers will soon get their chance to play Crisis in a public beta.
- Many Nforce motherboard owners are angry that Nvidia hasn't released 4, 5 or 6 series drivers for Vista.
Nintendo news:
- Square Enix is in talks with Nintendo, arguing against the use of friend codes.
- There's more information in the full interview with Square's Hiromichi Tanaka, including mention that seeing Chrono Trigger on the Virtual Console comes down to whether they can work out the copyright details with the now scattered former members of the game's design team.
- Capcom has a playable demo of Gyakuten Saiban 4 (that's the Phoenix Wright series to the rest of us) online in Flash. Unfortunately, it's all in Japanese.
- There are some more details as to what will be changed (and what won't) for Final Fantasy VI Advance. Certain things have been changed to be more in line with the original Japanese release, such as Cyan's SwdTech reverting to Bushido and each party character having unique classes named under their portraits. Thankfully, Terra and Sabin have not been renamed Tina and Mash.
Sony news:
- Sony says that retailers can expect 220,000 units for the PS3's UK launch.
- Sony has made an attempt to explain the higher UK price for the PS3.
- A Blast Factor multiplayer pack and PS1 racer Jet Moto have been added to the Playstation Store.
- David Jaffe has put up a liveblog of the Calling All Cars focus test, which is partly informative about the game testing process, partly amusing stream of consciousness. "it's really nerve wracking when they make faces that look either like they don't dig your game or are taking a shit."
- Japanese love hotels are advertising free PS3 rentals. Maybe some people need to play games to get in the mood?
- Edios says that Kane & Lynch are not coming to the PS3. The article doesn't have a direct quote, so it's hard to know if they said "it's not coming" or "we haven't announced anything yet."
Microsoft news:
- Capcom is preparing an update for Lost Planet.
- Physics-heavy racer FlatOut is coming to the 360.
- New content is up on the Video Marketplace, including a few free episodes of new TV shows.
- Gamestop had a listing, now removed, for a 512 meg memory card dated for March 1.
- The Forza 2 track list has been revealed. Not the music, the racing tracks.
Comments
Considering you can name characters whatever you want in FFVI, I think every one will be happy anyway.
The other stuff they're making more like the Japanese original sounds positive to me.
