The Saturday Scan - Business Boy
With the ever growing fleet of non-game applications for the DS -- from dictionaries to Internet browsers to English trainers to a cookbook -- I've been reminded of a similar attempt by GameTek in 1991 to give PDA-type functions to the original Game Boy. Needless to say, it didn't fare quite so well.
Not to be outdone, the next year saw the very limited release of the Workboy by FabTek (people in the early '90s loved software companies with Tek in the name), which offered some of the same functionality of the InfoGenius series, but took it a step further with a plug-in mini-keyboard. As you can probably guess, this is now one of the most sought-after Game Boy peripherals among collectors (even moreso than the Singer Izek Game Boy enabled sewing machine or the Game Boy pocket sonar).
Just for historical reference, remember that these would've been in direct competition with things like this (borrowed from the Computer History Museum).
I always wondered if these "games" never took off because the intended audience (businessmen and heavy travellers) didn't find out about them, or because they did know but they just couldn't bring themselves to continually refer back to a bulky grey brick with maroon buttons. Possibly both. At any rate, it shows how much interface and public perception can affect success -- often just as much as the work you put into the actual program itself. There's been a lot of well made, incredibly useful and unique software made over the years, for PCs and consoles alike, that failed at retail simply because it wasn't the right time or the right hardware.

They didn't even spell "francais" correctly.

Oh. Wow. I'm sure people went absolutely crazy over the Workboy when they heard about its 255-year appointment book. This is exactly what everybody was clamoring for.
Clearly I need to check my Game Boy to remember what I'll be doing in 2170! Thank you, Workboy!

I like the Wheel of Fortune cartoon.
Puzzle : "GOVE###ENT AGENCY"
Contestant : "It can't be 'Goverment' -- It has too many letters."
I'm interested in what the artist thought the solution to this puzzle was, since the letter 'N' has already been played.
