Industry and multi-console news:
- If you're reading this before 6:00 PM EST, remember that the GTA4 trailer hits today at that time. If you're reading this after, desperately scramble for a server hosting the trailer that isn't being hammered into the dirt.
- In the meantime, you can read a Wired article about the rise and current fall of Rockstar and Take Two.
- Jack Thompson has revised his counterclaim against Take Two, removing all the allegations of racketeering. Thus, also removed was any mention of Spong or Kotaku or Penny Arcade or any of the other supposed "co-conspirators."

- Insert Credit has an editorial about the sudden surge in use of the term "SKU" among the gamer press and fan community. I don't agree with it though. SKU has caught on because it's a handy term, especially when describing one of several types of bundles as we've seen with recent console releases. Not everyone uses it just to sound like an "industry insider."

- Chiptune musician Herbert Weixelbaum has a lengthy page comparing the sound output of various Game Boy models.
- What you're missing out by not living in Japan: DS games that teach you how to walk beautifully. Actually, as silly as it sounds, I wish some American women would take lessons in walking beautifully so they'd stop clomping around like gorillas. Pro tip: If you walk across the room and vases threaten to rattle off their shelves, you're not distributing your weight properly.
- Norwegian Cruise Lines will be installing Wiis on all their cruise ships over the next month.

Superior replacement for "SKU": "version". It is less cliched and pretentious, and actually means something to someone who does not have retail experience. I totally agree with Insert Credit.
Another horrible piece of games jargon that should go away: "killer ap". Urgh.

I don't see why anyone gets upset with words. If they get popular, there's a reason for it. They fill a need.
The only time the complaint is really valid is with "shifting paradigms" and other business talk that is so vague and lacking in meaning as to be pointless.

"SKU" isn't just a retail term; it's useful for developers too. For example, if you're releasing in the US, UK and the rest of Europe, and you're releasing an Xbox360 version only in the US but a PS3 version in all 3 regions, you might talk about having 4 SKUs to deliver by the final milestone. If you said "version" you might just be referring to the language or platform.

I don't understand how it's pretentious anyway. That's what it's CALLED. It gives every one a single acronym that is understood regardless of the topic at hand, instead of using a bunch of arbitrary words that might be referring to the same thing.
The fact that anyone would be concerned that this is making people feel like "insiders" speaks loudly of their own levels of pretention, honestly.
