No News Is Good News
I started this site because I found the majority of games news sites to be obnoxious. I still do. There was no simple, all-in-one news source (even if it was just an aggregator) that covered all the stories without an abundance of Flash ads or wacky commentary. (One could say even I failed in the latter, but at least it didn't last longer than a sentence or two.) Even major sites like IGN and Gamespot would often miss out on a lot of smaller things that weren't handed to them in press releases. So, I tried to make what I wanted to see.
Unfortunately, there's probably a reason why there aren't sites like that around. It's time consuming (if you actually bother to read the articles before you link them to filter out misleading headlines and misreported crap), it's mundane, and ultimately, you're not generating any fresh content yourself. The popularization of RSS feeds also make aggregators slightly redundant, at least without a voting gimmick like Digg. I still don't understand why one of the larger blogs like Kotaku or Joystiq can't get one guy to do what I do (they, like all other news sites, always end up missing something -- Joystiq especially) to cover all their bases, but I guess they're doing all right without it.
So, I'm dumping the news. It was an experiment worth undertaking, but not all experiments work out. I hate to quit, just out of stubbornness if nothing else. But I wasn't planning on doing this my whole life, so I was going to have to quit sometime. Better to do it when the site is small and it's easier to change gears.
For the two of you who may have actually been relying on this site for news, you may wish to check into a clinic now, lest the depression resulting from the loss of my guidance turn your thoughts to suicide. Alternatively, you can turn to the aforementioned RSS feeds to get a rough approximation of what I do. Did. My personal recommendation would be to use one "real" news site and one professional blog -- Gamespot and Kotaku would provide fairly rounded coverage. I'm going to put up a little guide to the various news sites later on that you can use to make an informed decision about where to get gaming info and I can use to bitch about the places I've been trawling for the last year and a half.
Finally, I hope you didn't write any important formulas for youth potions in my comments because I'm probably going to go around deleting all the old newsposts.

Good luck to all your newfound time. I enjoyed the site for the few weeks I knew about it. Best of luck.

Bummer, but I understand. Hopefully someone else pops up to do the same thing. I just found the site recently and its been great. Thanks for all the hard work.

I just want to say thanks for all the hard work you put in, and that for the last 6 months, this is pretty much the only game site I visited.
Good luck with your future projects. I don't know about you, but my exams just ended (I hate bio-chem so much) and now I'm going to enjoy the sun (and by that I mean stare at girls wearing very little clothing and perhaps even...talk to a few!!!!)

I used to be subscribed to around 150 game news feeds, and would check them obsessively. I eventually stopped, because I got sick of reading through hundreds of news posts a day. It's too bad this site won't be posting game news anymore, as it seems I'll have to revert back to the ridiculous amount of feeds.
Have you thought about using del.icio.us? Just tagging game news stories you find interesting, and having it post them here?
Posted by: Pinegrow | May 30, 2007 4:55 PM
This was honestly the first site I would check when I got home from school. I'll miss it, that's for sure.
Posted by: Jason | May 30, 2007 4:56 PM
I agree with the others, this was pretty much the first and only site I'd go to for gaming news and the like. Thanks for your hard work here and at P-Boi, Bill. Take care.
Posted by: Chad | May 30, 2007 5:14 PM
This is my favorite website that doesn't have lolcats.
Posted by: Braddy | May 30, 2007 5:17 PM
This was my only news source, all other game blogs blow. I'm going to miss it.
Posted by: Joe | May 30, 2007 5:20 PM
Awwww fuck. Well, thanks for the great site for such a long time Bill. I guess I'll revert to not getting any game news at all. Yours was the only one I ever bothered with.
Posted by: Andy | May 30, 2007 5:28 PM
Damn, dude. This was one of my most frequently visited and favourite sites. I'm going to miss it for sure. I appreciate all the work you've put into it and enjoyed getting my daily dose of your trademark sarcasm. Don't know how I'll waste small increments of time at school next year. Happy trails, Bill.
Posted by: LCadwallader | May 30, 2007 5:29 PM
Thanks for all the hard work. I'll miss the news.

Posted by: webber | May 30, 2007 5:31 PM
Echo what Joe said. You basically saved me the hard work of wading through the uninteresting stories on numerous RSS feeds to tell me what I wanted to know. The trouble with feeds is that article headlines are so often too vague to know whether its worth reading or not.
That said, I realise it must have been a great waste of effort on your part for no return. Good luck with whatever you do with the place. I'll certainly keep watching.
But god damn, back to the ugly, bloatware, ad-infested news sites to get my "scoops". And no force on earth would get me subscribing to Kotaku.
Posted by: Otis | May 30, 2007 5:32 PM
Thanks for the year and a half of reliable gaming news, Bill. A lot more people appreciated this place than you probably knew, so if nothing else you can rest assured your updates had an audience even if they weren't always the most vocal.
Posted by: Justin | May 30, 2007 5:39 PM
Yeah, we can get news at those other sites, but I liked getting it here.
Okay, so you said you're dropping the news. So does tha mean other content will be here in its place?
Posted by: Bismark | May 30, 2007 5:47 PM
Aww... awwwwwwww. This was my one and only stop for gaming news. I would check the site throughout the day waiting for the update, and when I got done fishing though it, I was always wanting more. Then came the wonderful twice-a-day updates. Now no updates. RSS feeds can eat it, because they don't add the personal comments.
Oh well. Do what you gotta do, Bill. Yer still the best.
Posted by: Jim | May 30, 2007 5:47 PM
I've been coming to ErrorMacro for news exclusively for months now. It's been great to get all the news at once, and I think you did an awesome job doing it. Best of luck in wherever you go from here, and thank you for the time you put into it!
Posted by: Rob | May 30, 2007 6:04 PM
Thanks for what you did Bill.
Posted by: Randy | May 30, 2007 6:25 PM
Damn, that's a shame.
This was the only site I had the time to read and still get all the news.
Thanks for donating your time, and best of luck for the future.
Posted by: Gnumb | May 30, 2007 6:25 PM
Well, that was awesome while it lasted. I can't seriously see checking 20 sites a day for the news you give, so I guess it's back to the forums till a user run Error Macro pops up.
Posted by: Juno | May 30, 2007 6:32 PM
This is a shame. I always wondered how in the world you kept all of this up, so it's completely understandable. I can barely handle a post a day on the sites I work on.
I'm not big on Kotaku OR Joystiq, so I guess I'll wander around for a while.
Looking forward to whatever becomes of Error Macro.
Posted by: Tony | May 30, 2007 6:34 PM
Thanks everybody. This is more of a response than I expected.
The site itself isn't going anywhere. I'm just going to stop trying to be a news site and instead focus on my writing. Articles, scans, and dare I say the occassional blog-esque random rambling.
I don't know if that's as appealing as game news, but that's what you're getting.
Posted by: Ermac | May 30, 2007 6:36 PM
I never made a comment before, but I really liked checking this site for news and stuff. Your banners were always funny and classy at the same time. Your experiment was pretty successful, if you ask me.

Thank you so much for the time we've had at least!
I've been using this site exclusively for gaming news, i just can't navigate through the mess that is other sites.
I adored the funny remarks on each link as well.
Unless there's a way to make you reconsider, i'd really like to read that guide to others sites you mentioned sometime.
Posted by: emfan | May 30, 2007 6:48 PM
Bill, thanks a lot for all the hard work. It was nice while it lasted, but I guess I'll go back to skimming tons of RSS feeds. I don't know how long I can go without getting pissed at Kotaku and Joystiq, though... oh well. I would love to see you write some more editorial-like things and wish you luck with whatever you decide to do next-- I'll still be here to see it.

I don't mean this to sound harsh, but the saturday scans were always the least interesting part of this site for me. There was only so much "gee look at old magazines" I could really take before I got bored and started skipping them.
That said, I'd love a few more personal articles/ramblings. Opinion pieces are much more interesting to read, and I always appreciate them.
Posted by: Otis | May 30, 2007 6:56 PM
This was one of the 3 websites that I checked every morning before work and every night before I went to bed.
Thank you so much for your hard work. I mirror the statment made by others by saying this was one of, or The best video game news sources. You will be very, very missed.
Posted by: Robin | May 30, 2007 7:08 PM
How will I ever be able to get through my days at work now? Oh for shame....... I am chained to a cubicle, and will now be without error macro guy. Sometimes the fanboy bs was annoying, but for the most part this one probably the site that kept me from completely dying spiritually as a result of having an office job.
Posted by: Shaun | May 30, 2007 7:16 PM
Your RSS feed brightened up my homepage for far too short of a time. It's the only one I've actually read 100% of the news from, too. Great job, and good luck in the future.
Posted by: Gannon | May 30, 2007 7:46 PM
You provided a great service, and this was the only site I'd check for video game news. I look forward to the new incarnation of errormacro.
Thank you for your hard work in keeping us informed.
Posted by: Staincastle | May 30, 2007 7:48 PM
This is sad news. Your site was easily the most convenient as far as covering all bases and never failing to point out a great article or site that I probably never would've found out otherwise, and your commentary was always welcome.
I can see your reasons for choosing not to continue it, though, and I look forward to the new content.
Posted by: Abomstar | May 30, 2007 8:32 PM
Wow, bummer. I subscribe to a few other RSS feeds, but yours always had an interesting story or two (or three or four) that the others missed. It let me keep up on gaming news without wading through all the same stories at 10 different sites. Sorry to see it go!
Posted by: Tim | May 30, 2007 8:35 PM
Thanks for all your work. I understand not continuing it, but I dare say I'll miss the news site. It was a good run for the few months I knew about it; your site has been complete, concise, and enjoyable such that it became my primary source of gaming info (other than GameTrailers.com, which I only use for trailers because the rest of their content sucks).
Best of luck in the future :)
Posted by: Natashquan | May 30, 2007 8:41 PM
Sorry to see your website go. It is da bomb shits. Kept me alive at work, too.
Posted by: Jonnydangers | May 30, 2007 8:51 PM
Thanks for all the great work and good luck in the future.
Posted by: Dan | May 30, 2007 8:55 PM
Damn shame. You were what I considered the finest source of videogame news - period.
You found the good stuff, boiled out all the crap,ad presented it to us free of charge. I salute you sir.
Good luck man! You meant the world to us - and shall always be fondly remembered.

I've never commented before but I've been visiting Error Macro since the begening. It's become my primary and prefered news source on the next.
Hate to see you go, but thanks for creating the best news site I ever did see. I've always apriciated your hard work and witty comments on the state of videogames today.
Thank you so much for this great site. I look forward to what you will make of Error Macro.
Posted by: Loki | May 30, 2007 9:14 PM
It's a shame to see you go. Error Macro had quickly become one of my favorite sites.
Thank you for providing the service as long as you did. I even enjoyed your commentary.
Posted by: Cody | May 30, 2007 9:25 PM
I don't know what I am going to do at work now... I hope I don't start actually working...
Posted by: fakewisdom | May 30, 2007 9:31 PM
Nooooooooooooooooooo!
This site was EXACTLY what I was looking for, just news with some humourous dry commentary!
I hope you reconsider, if not, thanks for hard work you put in!
Posted by: drpleaser | May 30, 2007 9:52 PM
Damn, a cold hard shame. Loved the site, and look forward to seeing any other writings you might do, I loved what you did at the now barely updating Pro Boi site.
But ya gotta do what ya gotta do, and I understand if you want to move on with your life.
BTW, if each one of us who cared went to one site and found most of the interesting info on it and posted it here, we'd probably create a bigger and possibly better Error Macro. Or a long and convuluted unending forum post.
Posted by: Dave | May 30, 2007 9:54 PM
Just look at your own title graphic!!
"You can't cut back on error macro! You will regret this!!!"
Posted by: drpleaser | May 30, 2007 9:55 PM
Darn...well as one of the two people that did rely on this site for my gaming news I'm a little upset.
It is your blog, and I respect that fact wholeheartedly...but still...it is depressing.
Best of luck to you, and I look forward to new posts that you will make (as I love your style of commentary).

this was the only site i read for gaming news. fuck man, where am i going to go now
Posted by: Anonymous | May 30, 2007 11:02 PM
no! with erromacro gone I will have to kill myself now!
In all seriousness this was my go to place for updates on gaming Ermac, and I made it a point to check every day. If you make a blog or opt to go some other path I will definitely read your writing. Thank you for your efforts, for what its worth.
Posted by: dave | May 30, 2007 11:23 PM
I will miss what you did, man. Just straight summaries with the occasional sarcasm attached. No not-funny writers, no useless cake stories, just what I want, and from everywhere.
Posted by: Cory | May 30, 2007 11:33 PM
worst birthday present ever!
thanks for running the site, i cheacked this twice daily (often 7 or 8 times hehe) and the news you provided was always relevent and funny,
will miss it muchly, good luck in the future

This was my favorite news site, over voodoo extreme, kotaku, 1up and bluesnews combined. Your comments were always spot on.
It will be missed.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 30, 2007 11:55 PM
Thank you for all that you have done. I have been reading the site multiple times daily for almost a year. I thoroughly enjoyed the times you put your two cents in on stories. Good luck in the future.
Posted by: Greg | May 31, 2007 12:02 AM
Thank you! and good luck!!
Posted by: Bergman | May 31, 2007 1:15 AM
Thanks a lot, Bill. It was a great year and a half. Like many others I checked the site several times a day and always loved your two sentence commentaries. I'll miss having a single source for gaming news, but can't wait to see what you do with the site in the future.
Good luck.
Posted by: Michael | May 31, 2007 1:19 AM
This was the only gaming site I checked every day, not to mention I loved everything you did on P-Boi. I know I'm like the 60th poster to say this, but thanks for the hard work.
Posted by: pluffy | May 31, 2007 1:45 AM
i literally checked this site every day.
Posted by: MJW | May 31, 2007 2:24 AM
Aww man. Thanks for making the internet a better place to be. Your efforts will be missed.
Posted by: Fredescu | May 31, 2007 2:24 AM
Man, today is full of bad news.
Let me echo the others; this was one of the only sites I obsessively checked for the last few months, and I greatly appreciated your efforts. I hate wading through the garbage of Kotaku, or dealing with the annoying flash and other crap at the other sites.
Have you considered some ways of supporting the time you invest into the site? I'd buy an Error Macro T-shirt. ;)
I hope this doesn't sound too harsh, but I doubt I'll stick around for scans/writings/etc. Good luck with your pursuits.
Posted by: skywardshadow | May 31, 2007 3:40 AM
Just like everyone else - this site IS one of the only non-obnoxious news sites and I really liked it. It's a shame you're stopping, but I can understand why you are.
Posted by: ThePiousFlea | May 31, 2007 4:04 AM
Damn, man. I really liked Error Macro's game news, even if I commented inconsistently. You suck for ending it, but at least you might be able to write some cool stuff like back in your P-Boi days.
Posted by: Alan | May 31, 2007 5:12 AM
NOOOOOOOOO. Goddamnit.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 31, 2007 6:50 AM
You can't cut back on error macro! You will regret this!
(it's on your own site even)
Posted by: Anonymous | May 31, 2007 7:09 AM
I think I must check myself into the clinic, this was the only site I checked. I loved your spin on it, and yes gathering it can be a bitch i've done it. But its also satisyfing to know you have readers, this isn't like a blog no one knows about it seems to be a well traveled place and I guess its ashame this shall be my final visit then.
Posted by: StingX2 | May 31, 2007 9:28 AM
Yeah, this was my favorite site for games news just because it was all listed in a nice way and I didn't have to sift through all the crap. Thanks for everything you've done! I'll still check this site daily for...something.
Posted by: Chris | May 31, 2007 9:46 AM
I sure wish there was a replacement. Error Macro was the best game news site.
Perfect for those of us who can't stand the idiots at Joystiq or the idiots at Kotaku who keep trying to be more like the idiots at Joystiq.
Maybe you should train a replacement. An apprentice.
Posted by: Andy | May 31, 2007 2:15 PM
A sad day indeed.
Posted by: Pal | May 31, 2007 2:53 PM
I'm sorry to hear that. I always relayed on your site for gaming news, now I will have to go through neogaf or some shit like that.
Anyways, thanks for your posts all this time, you did a really good work and I really appreciate it.
I'll still be subscribed to this blog, I'm sure you'll have something interesting to say ;)
Posted by: schism | May 31, 2007 7:32 PM
I'm sorry to hear it.. I really liked the news posts - the convenience and detail they offered was second to none.
Still, it's your decision.. good luck in the future.
Posted by: IceCold | May 31, 2007 8:22 PM
But hey, looking at it optimistically, if this means more of "Mario's Bastard Children" then...
..I guess it won't hurt as bad :)
Posted by: IceCold | May 31, 2007 8:32 PM
I'll really miss the news post. Saved me alot of time when browsing for news.
Guess it's RSS from now on, then.

Aw. Well, I certainly enjoyed it while it lasted. Kudos!
Posted by: Dozus | May 31, 2007 11:44 PM
I certainly enjoyed coming here for almost-no-nonsense game reporting without a megaton of ads and cookie forward and what not. I will miss this.

Aww. =( This was the only site I read for gaming news any more. I loved how it was all succinct, comprehensive, straight-forward, and with no crap. For the last six months I've come here once a day (twice a day recently) to get updated quickly about all of the gaming news in one place. It was easy to tell what I would be interested reading about with your succinct summaries.
I can imagine it'd be a terrible thorn in your side to update it twice a day though, with it always hanging over your head as something frustrating that you "have" to do, so I don't blame you. Especially without many comments and not knowing how many people are reading the updates. Thank you so much for all the updates you did do and for working so hard on the site, I really appreciate it!
Posted by: Sam | June 1, 2007 10:53 PM
It was greatly appreciated and it will be sorely missed.
Thanks for the last few months!
Posted by: Mike | June 2, 2007 6:09 AM
Nothing quite like this site for finding that unusual editorial actually worth reading. More blog commentary sounds like fun, but I wonder what I will do now to accurately keep up with gaming news. Digg is fun but hardly accurate or impartial. ^__^ I will be subsrcibing to those newsfeeds you reccomend in your heed.
