• EA has revealed FaceBreaker, a new boxing game with real-time facial deformation.
• The second European Game Developers Conference will be held in Paris at the end of June.
• Epic's Mark Rein admits that consoles are stealing hardcore gamers from the PC.
• Brash Entertainment has announced a game based on Space Chimps, an upcoming animated movie that we'll probably be seeing ads for every three minutes in the near future.
• The Patry Copyright blog has several excerpts from the judge's opinion on the Romantics vs. Activision case, in which they sued over a cover in Guitar Hero that sounded too much like their original. The judge denied the motion.
• Reuters has an article on actors getting a second chance in video game voice acting.
• Former EA exec David Gardner has been made CEO of Infogrames.
• Rockstar's Dan Houser says they expect a strong media reaction to GTA4, probably because they're not dumb. He also said that the title is less cartoony than previous iterations, both in graphics and writing.
• It looks like a GTA4 viral campaign is underway, with wanted posters for the main characters showing up in cities around the country.
• MTV's Multiplayer blog lists the top ten under the radar games for 2008.
• The latest OXM reveals the schedule for Rock Band downloadables in March. Nothing terribly exciting, to me at least, though I'm sure some people will be into the Nine Inch Nails pack and more Maiden and Sabbath. And I'm sure all the Metallica fans will be overjoyed to see their next song is Fuel.
• Yahoo Games breaksdown where the candidates stand on video game legislation issues. Amusing side note: Someone immediately complained that Ron Paul wasn't included in the recap.
• Despite complaints from the ECA, ESA and other acronyms starting with E, the New Mexico video game tax bill has been introduced.
• Valve says there is "more Portal for sure" coming. Sometime.
• Kotaku has what they say is 32 pages of the live-action Castlevania movie's script. I don't know how or if they've authenticated it.
• The Game Critics game of the year awards have been revealed, with Bioshock at number one in the top 10 of 2007.
• There's a rumor that ADV could be cancelling the release of the Devil May Cry anime in America. ADV says that the report from which this information was taken was a "contingency" draft and that "ADV is working through a few short-term challenges and fully intends to continue our releases." That doesn't sound good in general.

New media: Yet more Smash Bros. Brawl footage

• The Smash Dojo blog plans to start revealing hidden characters and stages, so even the official website is no longer safe for those fleeing from spoilers.
• The doctor who created Brain Training has refused all compensation for the title, because he "likes to work."
• The manager of the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association believes that up to 90% of American DS users play pirated games using the Chinese R4 chip. Of course, it's more likely 90% of American DS users don't know what an R4 chip is.
• Gamasutra asks whether Nintendo should bring back the Seal of Quality for Wii titles.
• Majesco has released more details on Major Minor's Majestic March, the new Wii rhythm game from the developers of Parappa.
• Eidos has announced Monster Lab, an action RPG for the Wii and DS.
• Nintendo Wii Fanboy has an gallery of odd Wii remote patent diagrams that Nintendo filed, from Wii remotes strapped to headbands to remotes stuck in the pedals of bikes and wheels of skateboards.
• Vintage Computing and Gaming looks at whether you actually save money by buying Virtual Console games instead of the actual carts on Ebay. It varies based on system (and what you're buying, obviously), but in general it is indeed cheaper. Especially when comparing the $6 price of Bonk 3 to the $200 it fetches at auction.
• Amazon's deal of the day is The Suite Life of Zack & Cody for $9.99.

Sony news

• SquareEnix has spoken out to quell rumors of dates or demos for FFXIII.
• Listings on the ESRB and Sony UK websites make it pretty clear that flOw is coming to the PSP.
• Sony has reduced their PS3 forecast to 9.5 million units by March 2008, down from the 11 million they repeatedly said they were on track to hitting. The concern seems to not be about the PS3 itself but in reduced consumer spending across the board in America.
• Atlus is bringing the all-girl 2D fighter Arcana Heart to the US on April 8.
• Warriors Orochi 2 is coming to Japanese PS2s on April 3.
• Home has undergone some changes as a result of feedback from testers.

Microsoft news

• Buku Sudoku will be coming to Live Arcade this year.
• Cooper Lawrence has spoken a little more about Mass Effect and the Fox debacle. Her original apology seemed like a complete back-down, but now she sounds a little more defensive. "I firmly stand by the research I cited that violence and sexual content in video games has a desensitizing effect on young developing minds."
• Xbox360Achievements.org has a list of the Achievements in the upcoming Triggerheart Exelica.
• Microsoft accidentally made the recent PAL Beautiful Katamari demo accessible to Live Silver users only. They're working to fix it.
• It seems Burnout Paradise requires a hard drive for online play.

• Gamespot takes a peek inside the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition. "Twenty homing pigeons were spray painted with the Virtua Tennis 2 logo and released during the Wimbledon tennis championships in 2003 to promote the game."
• Sony CEO Howard Stringer and others have suggested that in-game advertising may not be the great solution everyone thinks it is. "The [supposed] solution to everything at the moment in the digital space is ad supported. While advertisers are happy to talk that up, there is a limit to the amount of money available."
• British developer Kuju is opening an American studio.
• An October 2009 date has been set for an upcoming video game based on the Saw movies.
• The Age lists the top 10 Australian-made games.
• New consumer polls from Japan show how many Japanese gamers use each console's Internet functions, and for what purpose.
• A new Tekken 6 character has been revealed: a giant robot that appears on a bonus stage and beats the hell out of you so hard you're still allowed to continue if you lose, which is good because apparently no one has beat it yet.

• Officials in Maryland have blamed rap music and GTA for a growing gang problem. • The European Union is planning to expose price discrepancies for consoles in the UK in the hopes of shaming the big three into lowering their prices.

• PSP firmware 3.90 is now available and adds Skype functionality, but only for those with slim model PSPs.
• Sony has announced a new player-created insignia and paint scheme contest for Warhawk.
• Peripheral maker React is now selling wireless pedals for Guitar Hero games on the PS2 that allow you to activate the whammy bar and star power with your feet.

• EB Games in Australia has denied yesterday's rumor that they were planning to stop carrying the 360.
• Halo 3 has reclaimed the top spot on the Xbox Live activity charts.
• Things on Wheels is a racing game being prepped for Live Arcade.
• Poker Smash is next week's Live Arcade title. I barely even know her.
• Microsoft has announced details on the second batch of Lost Odyssey downloadable content.

Smash Bros. Brawl has been released in Japan (where it's called Dairantou Smash Brothers X) and as you can imagine, the Internet has exploded. It's going to be a hard month for anyone in the US wanting to avoid spoilers, as game rosters are already starting to pour in. You can watch the game's opening CG here, which briefly shows a couple of characters that weren't yet officially confirmed, though one was leaked a while back.

Anticipation is so ridiculous that someone actually took photos of the American Brawl manual just after it came off the press.

Industry and multi-console news

• Chair Entertainment Group and Orson Scott Card are partnering to create a series of games based on the Battle Room in Ender's Game.
• Next Generation has UK and European sales charts, though admittedly the latter would more accurately be called "the Europe that isn't the UK."
• I don't know which is more embarassing: The video from a week or two ago with Ellen Degeneres playing Guitar Hero on easy, or that she dedicated another several minutes of her show to the game by bringing on a kid to play Through the Fire and Flames on Expert. To be fair: The kid is really good.
• EA and Marvel have terminated their licensing agreement, cancelling a planned fighting game featuring Marvel and EA-created characters.
• Tickets are now on sale for the 2008 Penny Arcade Expo.
• Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami has started work on his first project for Platinum Games (formerly Seed, formerly Clover), but we have no idea what it is.
• Bit-tech has an article from Darwinia developer Introversion about staying independent.

• Another SimCity Societies patch is planned that promises to solve performance issues.

Nintendo news

• The Wii version of Civilization Revolution is currently on hold.
• Nintendo has Animal Crossing on the Wii scheduled for sometime in 2008. For now, anyway.

• It sounds like the Japanese version of Smash Bros. Brawl does have a bug that causes an error message, but the message itself seems to be the error and can be safely ignored.
• An entry on the ESRB database confirms that Phantasy Star II will be coming to the American Virtual Console.
• Nintendo believes that more third party games will start selling well on the Wii, it will just take time. "We identified the same thing in the DS' first period, and the situation continues to change little by little. • Disney had a hard time getting people to test their Disney Magic Connection map program on the DS. They admit this had something to do with park goers being accosted by people with clipboards asking them to lay down a $300 security deposit.
• Police who arrested a man with a stolen Wii are now trying to use the console's Miis to find its original owner.

• Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will hit North America on Blu-ray or via download for $39.99.
• Buzztime Entertainment has filed suit against Sony, saying Sony's line of Buzz! trivia games violates several of their trademarks.
• Koei has announced they'll be bringing Persona 3 to Europe on February 29.
• Konami has released a patch for Pro Evo 2008 to fix stuttering on analog TVs.
• Amazon's deal of the day is WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 for $25.00.

• The team behind Turning Point: Fall of Liberty has responded to fan feedback from the demo.
• One disgruntled Xbox customer decided to simply e-mail Bill Gates about his red-ringed 360 than deal with customer service. And he got a confirmation of a new system in 24 hours.
• IGN has the list of Achievements in Lost: Via Domus.
• Capcom will be selling Devil May Cry 4 on the 360 for £10 cheaper than the PS3 version. "I didn't realize we were the only publisher doing this. In actuality, it's not that the PS3 version has been made more expensive, but that our business model has allowed us to discount the Xbox 360 version."
• According to a Kotaku report, EB Games in Australia has $10 million worth of broken 360s that Microsoft won't take back. As a result, EB is refusing to stock any more 360s.
• EA has offered a fix for some Godfather Achievements that weren't working properly. Unfortunately the fix involves reseting them and then doing them all over again.
• Fox News says "Hey, wait! We can be a little slimier about this!" by quoting Cooper Lawrence's apology on Live Desk. No one from Fox apologized, thus making it sound like it was Cooper's fault, calling her "the guest who spoke out against the game."
• A pedophile (oh excuse me, "boy lover") recently made a video on YouTube (since taken down) in which he freely admits to using Xbox Live and Halo 3 to contact underage boys. "I’m not saying there is sexual involvement, but I’m not saying there isn’t.”
• Gamestop is selling Bioshock and the Darkness together for $59.99

Gaming Steve looks into the fine print of the agreement to find that the lawyers involved got one million dollars. You get 35 bucks. That is, depending on how much you can document your outrage: A full $35 payout will require you to still have on hand a detailed store receipt.
• This week's Rock Band tracks are Smashing Pumpkins - Siva, Rush - Working Man (cover), and Coheed and Cambria - Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial) (cover).
• Sarah Michelle Gellar is still working on making an Alice movie. "It's still my project, and I'm still working diligently. ... I'll do it if I have to get down and write it myself one of these days. I may have to."

• Square Enix has released Crystal Guardians W1, a real time strategy game featuring character classes from Final Fantasy Tactics A2, for Japanese mobile phones.

• THQ Wireless will be bringing multiple Playboy branded games to mobile phones. Don't worry though, no one will think you're creepy, because "THQ has made clear that its games will be non-nude, instead featuring scantily clad Playmates."
• PC game sales accounted for only 14% of the total industry take in 2007. One should bear in mind that the numbers don't count digital sales, which have been growing in popularity on the PC.

A thin week all around unless you really like dinosaurs and/or bomb-themed mini-games, with only Pacific Storm Allies and Pet Vet 3D Animal Hospital: Down Under on the PC rounding out the list. Meanwhile Japan gets Smash Bros., Devil May Cry 4 and Disgaea 3 all in one week. And Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi, if you're an anime geekanerd with an importing streak. The full worldwide release list can be seen here.

Update: There seems to be some debate as to whether Turok is actually coming out this week. Retailers say yes, the Turok site says no. It's either this week or next week, and that's close enough.

• 1up News Editor Patrick Klepek is leaving 1up to work for MTV's Multiplayer.
• According to legal documents in the ongoing court case, Silicon Knights paid $750,000 for the rights to use Unreal Engine 3.
• If you were wondering whether the money thrown at Yahtzee was worth it, it seems that Zero Punctuation has greatly increased the Escapist's readership. How odd that people weren't initially taken by all the lengthy articles on ludology.

• The Travel Channel's Anthony Bourdain reports from the set of FarCry, where he has a two second role as "doctor who gets shot."
• A blogger at GameTap visits Sunnyvale Golfland, once the prime spot for the newest and latest arcade games. But the market has changed a bit since those days. "[Tekken 6] is about $15,000, and for a fighting game, that's tough," he explains. "In the past with something like say, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, that's an obvious slam dunk. We'd order two for every location."
• A patch is being issued to change the Grab Bag achievement in Turok -- the one that required you kill an enemy, a creature, a teammate and yourself in a single online match. The PS3 version is also being patched (since the game has its own achievement-esque award system), and the patch will also add rumble.

• If you ever need to familiarize yourself with a Commodore 64 game, this is the way to go about it: The Internet Archive has over 100 gameplay videos of C64 titles ranging from Radar Rat Race to Ghostbusters. Not simply clips, but full playthroughs from beginning to end.

• A trademark filling and a listing on a French website is all one has to go on at the moment, but there could be a DS game called Guitar Hero: On Tour on the way.
• Super Smash Bros. Brawl's story mode is being written by the scenario writer for Final Fantasy VII.
• Koreans don't just do Starcraft. They also have televised Mario Kart matches.
• Those with sharper memories and nerdier leanings may remember the Bit Plains area in Populous, which in the SNES port was populated with buildings shaped like NES and SNES consoles. It's nice to know they're sticking with it for the DS port, though with updated systems, naturally.
• One Target location was sold out of copies of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, so they recommended picking up High School Musical on the GBA instead.
• Amazon is selling the Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training for $19.99.

But it’s not like pornography. I’ve seen episodes of ‘Lost’ that are more sexually explicit."

Coast to Coast AM is a syndicated radio talk show dealing with the paranormal and conspiracy theories. Naturally, they've usually got a bunch of quacks and loonies calling in to talk about their close encounter stories. But this caller named Gordon seems pretty on the level.

Further adventures await inside! Could they be.. spooky adventures?

This video is educational. From it we learn: 1) Xbox modders end up with a lot of extra hard drives. 2) They are bored. 3) They must be making some scratch to pay for this house.

From a series of strategy guides on VHS called How to Beat Home Video Games comes this guide to getting through E.T. on the Atari 2600. They do neglect to mention the most important tip, though, which is to turn off your Atari and walk away.

• THQ has confirmed reports that Frontlines on the PS3 is cancelled.
• An internal Best Buy letter says that the 80 gig PS3 is being discontinued, much the same way it was in Japan.
• At Kombo, a real race driver talks about Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. "The level of precision you can achieve is surprisingly accurate, meaning you can generate big, controllable slip angles. The limits feel both progressive and exploitable, but take it too far and you will pay the price, just as you would in a real car."
• Tetsuya Mizuguchi has given PS3 owners at least a vague hope of getting to see Rez HD on their system: "We started on Xbox 360, but we have no reason not to provide this game to other platforms."
• Tim Schafer has finished playing Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and was most impressed with the hero's choice of fashion. "So, on his left side, he tucked the shirt in, to show his trim figure and stylish belt buckle. 'What a handsome young man,' you might say, 'If he gets that shirt washed, he may date my daughter.' But his right side is untucked, like the shirt of a wild man, a renegade, a scoundrel. 'What is that guy up to? Why is his shirt untucked? Does he not give a damn about me and my rules?'"

Valve has released some more details on the upcoming changes to Team Fortress 2. Characters will gain unlockable weapons through earning achievements, leading to customizable loadouts. The Medic can unlock an Overhealer which permanently boosts other characters to double maximum health, but doesn't charge Uber very well (and may not charge Uber at all, they're still tinkering with it). They also mention a new game mode that sounds to me like kind of a mix between the Gold Rush and Rail Gun maps in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

• A Gamestop employee was robbed at knifepoint by a man muttering to himself, and Kotaku's Brian Crecente compares this to past incidents in wondering if Gamestop is generally a dangerous place to work. "Has GameStop become the 7-Eleven of this generation?"
• Speaking of Gamestop, they're planning to broaden their consumer base in 2008 to reach out to all those new cash-stuffed casual gamers.
