Yehuda has a long list of board and card games based on video games, most of which I never knew existed or tried very hard to forget. Oh, for that magical time in the mid '90s when everyone was in such a rush to make a card game out of every Goddamn thing that they made some very silly decisions.
Industry and multi-console news
New media: Bourne Conspiracy trailer, Turok - Awakening the Giants documentary part 4
- Gamespot takes a peek inside the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition. "Twenty homing pigeons were spray painted with the Virtua Tennis 2 logo and released during the Wimbledon tennis championships in 2003 to promote the game."
- Sony CEO Howard Stringer and others have suggested that in-game advertising may not be the great solution everyone thinks it is. "The [supposed] solution to everything at the moment in the digital space is ad supported. While advertisers are happy to talk that up, there is a limit to the amount of money available."
- British developer Kuju is opening an American studio.
- An October 2009 date has been set for an upcoming video game based on the Saw movies.
- The Age lists the top 10 Australian-made games.
- New consumer polls from Japan show how many Japanese gamers use each console's Internet functions, and for what purpose.
- A new Tekken 6 character has been revealed: a giant robot that appears on a bonus stage and beats the hell out of you so hard you're still allowed to continue if you lose, which is good because apparently no one has beat it yet.
- Some new details on Faith and a .45 have been released.
- Officials in Maryland have blamed rap music and GTA for a growing gang problem. "In the ’80s and ’90s, you didn’t have video games, you didn’t have the violence in the media, you didn’t have the Internet. It creates a lack of respect for life and makes violence acceptable." Yes, thank God there was no violent media in the '80s.
- Something Awful has a list of Photoshopped Team Fortress 2 achievements. "Nero's Song -- As a medic, use your bonesaw taunt while a teammate burns to death in front of you."
- Wired has a look at one page from the Prince of Persia graphic novel.
- The European Union is planning to expose price discrepancies for consoles in the UK in the hopes of shaming the big three into lowering their prices.
- The Dallas Morning News recently ran an editorial by Kay Hymowitz on young men of today stuck in a "hormonal limbo" between adolescence and adulthood -- wherein she seems to define adulthood as being in a career and married with kids. She suggests young men delaying marriage, watching cartoons and playing video games indicates a maturity gap in the current generation. A writer at File Front offers a rebuttal.
- A Gradius II Vic Viper model is coming in April.
- Gamasutra has an article on French developers getting tax credits for video games.
PC and mobile news

- Applied Game Design looks at advergaming by examining four horrible H&R Block themed game apps on Facebook
- Bloomsix has announced Armada: Kingdoms, an MMO for Java-enabled cellphones.
- Amazon's deal of the day is Civilization IV: Gold Edition for $19.99. They also have Galactic Civilizations II Gold on sale for $29.99.
Nintendo news
New media: Multiple Smash Bros. Brawl gameplay videos, taken from the full Japanese version of the game
- The DS has passed the one million sales mark in Australia.
- The Cooking Mama series has sold 1.6 million units in the US.
- This week's Zero Punctuation video review is Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.
- A Fatal Frame title for the Wii is currently in development.
- Japanese gamers will soon get to download a Ninja Gaiden DS demo from their Wii. Everyone outside of Japan is out of luck.
- Famitsu has revealed new details on Front Mission 2089 on the DS.
- Shigeru Miyamoto says that Nintendo could release separate games that use the WiiFit balance board if WiiFit does well in America. He also mentions that he's interested in a Mario Galaxy sequel, though I wouldn't take that to mean much.
- Japan continues to get a line of bizarre training games with a new title that teaches you how to dress.
- The last segment of Wii.com's discussion between Satoru Iwata and Masahiro Sakurai about Smash Bros. Brawl is out, and includes screenshots of a 1999 prototype for the original N64 Smash Bros.
Sony news
- PSP firmware 3.90 is now available and adds Skype functionality, but only for those with slim model PSPs.
- Sony has announced a new player-created insignia and paint scheme contest for Warhawk.
- Peripheral maker React is now selling wireless pedals for Guitar Hero games on the PS2 that allow you to activate the whammy bar and star power with your feet.
Microsoft news
New Live Arcade titles: Rez HD, Chessmaster Live
New content: Beautiful Katamari demo (Australia, Europe and New Zealand), GRAW2 map pack
- David Sirlin says they are having trouble fitting everything for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD into the Xbox Live file size limit, and that it will be "difficult or impossible" to include both the original game music and the remixed soundtrack.
- EB Games in Australia has denied yesterday's rumor that they were planning to stop carrying the 360.
- Halo 3 has reclaimed the top spot on the Xbox Live activity charts.
- Things on Wheels is a racing game being prepped for Live Arcade.
- Poker Smash is next week's Live Arcade title. I barely even know her.
- Microsoft has announced details on the second batch of Lost Odyssey downloadable content.
- A recent Gamestop e-mail says that Too Human is coming May 6.
