Newspost for 03-23-07
Screenshots and a short trailer for a new Sonic game that is apparently called Sonic Unleashed have hit the Internet. It's only right to regard any new Sonic game with an enormous dose of skepticism, but the fact that it's played primarily on a 2D plane is enough to garner my (very minute, very cautious) interest.
Sega magazine briefly had an official announcement about the game, but it was quickly removed and is now back to being called a rumor. Unfortunately, said announcement made mention of becoming "Wolf Sonic", which takes my fleeting interest and pisses on it.
Meanwhile, apparently not the least bit hopeful about this new venture, Destructoid's Jim Sterling argues how to save Sonic the Hedgehog.

They would then teleport to major cities and detonate themselves, killing nearby players."

It makes me sad that there will never be another Sonic game of the same caliber as 2, 3, and & Knuckles were. The most beautiful 2D graphics ever, totally varied environments, some brilliantly scored, infectious music, and... essentially, not a whole lot else. I don't think they were the pinnacle of ingenious platforming game design, although the controls were very tight and the concept of speed obviously perfected, it's just that they were so generally pleasing to all senses. Sonic's always sort of been about "just hold down the button and move to the right and jump every once in a while"... pretty brainless, but great fun. Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush couldn't capture the magic at all.
