It's a banner day for nerds in support of seemingly lost causes, as Ubisoft reveals a Beyond Good & Evil sequel teaser trailer.
This is part of Ubisoft's big media event Ubidays, which is why there's so much news coming from them today. On that note, here's a collection of new screenshots that have come out of the show.
Industry and multi-console news
New media: Soul Calibur IV gameplay footage with Darth Vader, Far Cry 2 trailer, Prince of Persia trailer, Street Fighter IV concept art, Spore creature phase screenshots
- Capcom has confirmed previous reports that Street Fighter IV is coming to the 360, PS3 and PC.
- The new UK sales chart sees GTA4 still on top, while Wii Fit has dropped out of the top 40 due to stock shortages.
- Next Generation has an interview with author James Patterson about his entrance into the game market.
- EA has announced a free map pack for Army of Two, coming May 29.
- Ubisoft has confirmed that their game based on James Cameron's Avatar will be in 3D.
- There's an article on Salon entitled How Rock Band saved my marriage.
- A Street Fighter IV trailer and 30-second commercials will air on CBS May 31, during the EliteXC Saturday Night Fights.
- The European Union ranks as the second largest territory for gaming in the world, next to Asia.
- Gamasutra has an interview with Sony's dialog manager about voice acting in games. He believes veteran voice actors are a better choice than celebrities. Now only if Dreamworks knew that.
- Gamers with Jobs talks about gaming as an emotional crutch. "But when an infrequent magic bullet became my default method of dealing, it was no good. I wore out the welcome, depleted the charge, turned it from something to treasure into something to tick off in my list of daily gruntwork."
- Guitarist Slash believes video games turn kids into lethargic zombies. Except for Guitar Hero, that is.
- Philosophers agree the key to a successful and productive life is to get hammered in the nerdiest way possible. Hence, Final Fantasy themed custom drinks. Their virgin drink is the Aerith, har.
- Big Download compares the PC and 360 versions of Penny Arcade Adventures Episode One.
- Uwe Boll hasn't reported what Postal grossed. The world may never know.
- Everybody's going back and checking old art now, and finding that San Andreas has a guy with six fingers too.
- In regards to the relationship between game companies and reviewers, former Gamespot staffer Alex Navarro mentions a time in which a company told him to hold a review until launch day if it was under a 9.0. If it was over 9.0, they could post it immediately.
PC and mobile news
New content: World in Conflict 1.0008 patch, Guns of August 1.23 patch
- Pirates of the Burning Sea players with at least one level 50 character are being invited to Flying Lab's Seattle office to test a new mission.
- GameTap is closing their editorial section.
- 1up looks at what happens when MMOs die. "We gathered at the crater-center and awaited the dreaded 'Connection Lost' message, and a feeling of emptiness and sense of true loss followed for the rest of the week."
- In Japan, a port of Professor Layton is coming to cell phones.
- MTV Multiplayer asks around to find out why the original release of Peggle didn't get many reviews.
- Amazon has Dungeon Siege II: Deluxe Edition for $12.99.
Nintendo news
New media: Fatal Frame 4 scans -- apparently Suda 51 is involved in this
- EA has announced Sim City Creator for the Wii.
- Consumer Reports has tested Wii Fit. No one seems very convinced that the Wii Fit actually provides any exercise.
- Ubisoft has announced Raving Rabbids TV Party. It will contain minigames that use the Wii balance board, including one that is the first game you control with your butt.
- They've also announced Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking for the DS, which helps you get away from butts.
- And they've announced Shaun White Snowboarding, which supports the balance board but contains no butts.
- This week's Zero Punctuation review is for The World Ends With You.
- Majesco has announced Wonder World Amusement Park for the DS.
- Apparently the Wii is a good choice for swingers as a way to loosen up before orgying all over each other.
- Remember that mysterious moon teaser image in Nintendo Power? Maybe it's Earthbound, maybe it's something from Factor 5... Nope! Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia! Prank'd!
- Amazon has Wario: Master of Disguise for $14.21.
Sony news
- Take Two has confirmed that BioShock is coming to the PS3 with new content.
- Bethesda says there is no initial installation for Fallout 3. "That doesn't mean we don't use the hard drive, just that it does it in the background as opposed to a large, upfront install."
- Amazon has Ninja Gaiden Sigma for $39.99.
Microsoft news
New Live Arcade titles: Warlords, Buku Sudoku and free puzzle pack
New media: Gears of War 2 scans -- Why are we relying on Japanese magazine scans for a western game?
- The TV series Codemonkeys and other G4 programming is now available through the Xbox Live Video Marketplace. Just imagine if they offered something worth watching!
- Gamasutra talks to XNA's Boyd Multerer about Xbox Live Community Games.
- At least one Live Arcade game developer has come out in support of the delisting plans. Ironically he's from the company who made Rocky & Bullwinkle, which I have to imagine is one of the titles likely to be delisted somewhere down the line.
- This week, Target is selling 1600 Microsoft Points cards for $15.
- Gamestop has provided more details on the Gears of War re-issue.
- Amazon's deal of the day is Call of Duty 4 Game of the Year Edition for $39.99. They're doing a lot of 360 sales all around, including substantial amounts off games like The Club and Conflict: Denied Ops. If that isn't enough, all of today's Gold Box deals are 360 games.
