The Error Macro Video Gallery - A Three Dimensional Joystick Made Out of Meat

Stumbling bleary-eyed through the bowels of a hulking 95-hour Fallout 3 save game, along with a continuing fruitless job search (unemployment does wonders for 95-hour game saves) and arguing with Google over ads (note the newly tidy side bar -- I lost) has left me distracted from the site of late. But in sifting through old notes I've got left on my hard drive, I notice I had a set of links for another video gallery that I never actually put up. Well, there's no time like the present, even when the time was supposed to be three months ago.

Starting off is a tongue-in-cheek rap performed over one of Donkey Kong Country 2's most popular BGM tracks, Stickerbrush Symphony. I think it's impossible to tell someone "this is a rap set to video game music" and make it sound like a good idea, so I guess you'll just have to take my word for it.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - This Story is Happy End

A montage of bad NES video game endings. I think it's clear Ghoul School does not belong in here.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - Kill Ducks

A 1988 episode of 20/20 brings this John Stossel report on that damned Nintendo thing the kids are so into these days. Pretty much every moment of this is gold, from Stossel's incredulous tone while describing Mario's "ridiculous plot," to his questions of why the Japanese are the ones having all the success (still a genuine concern in the late '80s), to the kid at 4:26 in the first video with really odd controller hand placement. But better still is watching the whole thing and counting how many quotes could apply to games today with no change whatsoever, right down to the lines in Japan for Dragon Quest and claims that Nintendo is creating a false shortage to fuel demand.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - This Is How We Do It

Here's some trivia: There was a version of Mega Man released for DOS. Here's some more trivia: It was horrible. This video demonstrates that fact with startling clarity. I believe the full title for the DOS version was Mega Man: OH GOD DOGS

The Error Macro Video Gallery - MAD World

There's a trend in Japan called MAD Movies. They're similar to the AMVs YouTube gets plagued with, but somewhat different, and I'll let Wikipedia handle the explanation:

The main difference between AMVs and MADs though, is the fact that MADs are more like parodies. Instead of clips from anime series, MAD videos use similar effects found in opening or ending sequences of anime. Those effects tend to be synchronized with the music. Furthermore, MADs do not necessarily have to be anime related, where as AMVs are implied to require anime.

So what we have here is a parody of Fullmetal Alchemist's opener and closer with Final Fantasy VI characters replacing the cast. It's actually pretty damn impressive, as it seems to be comprised of a lot of original animation. This is also likely the closest we'll ever get to a full FFVI anime, so take what you can get.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - Really Big or Rather Big

In honor of the July 4th weekend, this week's gallery starts off with the level transition cutscenes from the criminally underappreciated* fireworks puzzler Fantavision. Of course, July 4 is already over. And these cutscenes don't have much in the way of fireworks in them. So I guess the whole thing is really more non-sequitur than anything else. But that's appropriate, because they don't make any sense in the game either.

* Kids! Only a certain percentage of this statement is sarcasm -- use the Pocket Science Guide from last ish to calculate how much! Ask your parents to help!

The Error Macro Video Gallery - We'll Do It Live

I suppose, given today's events, I'm obligated to make the first video in today's gallery this 19 minute run of Diablo III gameplay footage.

I could've used the debut trailer, but that doesn't really tell you much. Even less if you're like me and you've never actually played a Diablo before.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - A Computer or Something

A GTA4 video with a more traditional approach to stunts: that is, focusing on sticking the landing. It does get a little repetitive, but I guess there are only so many ways to flip a car.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - Wiggle It Like A Madman

If the officially licensed Guitar Hero Carabiner and Air Guitar Rocker toys weren't enough to indicate that Activision wants to grind the Guitar Hero franchise into the ground in the most embarrassing ways possible, here's more proof: The Guitar Hero On Tour "How To" video. Even if I give them the benefit of the doubt and say this is meant to be ironic, it's still terrible. And who the hell told them bringing back guitar battles was a good idea?

On a side note, what's with that kid? You look at his face and he's about 14, then you see his arms and damn I don't have that much hair on my head.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - From Westport to Walla Walla

This has already made the Internet circuit a couple times by now, but what do you want from me, I'm a busy man. Jason Zumwalt, voice actor for Roman from Grand Theft Auto IV, tries to parlay his one time gig to something more substantive.

Sadly, Zumwalt later had to actually explain to people that this was a joke. He also took the video down from his account after Rockstar expressed concern about their intellectual property (a claim I don't really get), but naturally once something is on the Internet it is never not on the Internet.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - Tuning

A while back people starting making hacked Mario World levels that could be completed without ever touching the controller, just by letting Mario get guided around by the environment. Naturally that's not good enough, so now we need an 11 minute level that doesn't have to be touched and plays along to music. There are a number of songs in there, unfortunately most of them are themes from one anime or another.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - Spottin' Bugs Bought This Van

What was it like being a tester for the Playstation in the mid-'90s? Apparently, it was a haze of overtime and bad hair. This video from one of the Playstation Underground CDs features conversations with some of SCEA's testers as well as Warhawk and Twisted Metal producer Mike Giam. Appearances by Jet Moto 2, Final Fantasy VII and Armored Core put this at somewhere around fall of 1997.

On the subject of Twisted Metal, Playstation Underground also has video of an interview with David Jaffe from 1996, talking about TM2 and looking very young.

The Error Macro Video Gallery - Chills Again

The Street Fighter movie (the Van Damme one) is old hat by now, but I must admit I had never before seen (or even heard of) the music video that accompanied it. A song entitled Straight To My Feet performed by MC Hammer, featuring Deion Sanders, and with a video "starring" Jean Claude Van Damme along most of the cast of the film, including everyone's favorite, Captain Sawada. It's a perfect storm of mediocrity!
